Reggio-Approach

The Reggio Approach to education was created by Loris Malaguzzi in Reggio Emilia, Italy. It is an approach to education that views the child as confident and capable of constructing their own learning that is driven by their interests. It is a unique approach that is designed within the context of the community. Although we can never implement the approach in its entirety as it is imbedded in the Italian culture, we apply many of their principles in the way we approach children, as well as the learning experiences we offer daily.

In comparison to traditional styles of teaching our program methodology supports the interest of the child. In the words of Malaguzzi (1998) children expresses themselves using hundred different languages. When children are offered opportunities to explore, create, and collaborate with their peers in numerous contexts aids in creative expressions and empowerment by the teachers and their learning environments. Our environment serves as the third teacher and it is reflective of their interests. As the educator, our role consists of designing the environment to foster a sense of ownership and belonging.

Creating a positive learning environment, allows children to feel comfortable, safe, and empowered. As a Reggio-inspired program, much focus is placed on respect and establishment of creating a community atmosphere that is welcoming to all children and families. “The teacher develops an identity that is in relation to the children, the families, and the social atmosphere”. All teaching staff actively engage and participate in the learning experiences and knowledge in collaboration with parents and children.
